BioWare has revealed Mass Effect 2’s first paid DLC, Kasumi’s Stolen Memory.

Kasumi’s Stolen Memory sees Kasumi (obviously) recovering a rare item from a collector’s vault, with the DLC seeing you infiltrating a house party to get to the vault and then survive battles to get back out alive.

It’s not the mission that’s the interesting part though. Kasumi will not only bring new powers to the table but she can also be used throughout the rest of the game, even for the final suicide mission.

BioWare has done a good job keeping the in-game Cerberus Network topped up with free DLC but Kasumi’s Stolen Memory should be worthy of its paid DLC tag. The only grey area is while we know its due on April 6th, BioWare hasn’t revealed the price yet.

It’s a busy week for us at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. Today we announced that3D Vision Support will be integrated into Epic Games’ popular Unreal Engine 3 (UE3)- UE3 was used to make BioShock 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, and Borderlands. Even Epic’s free version of UE3, Unreal Development Kit(UDK) will get in on the 3D Vision action. So, if you’re one of the 200,000 current UE3 or UDK users worldwide, you’re in for some 3D theater-quality goodness

For developers, this support means they can now implement stereoscopic 3D effects into their PC games and know that their upcoming titles will look great when played in 3D. For gamers with NVIDIA GPUs, it means they they continue to have the best gaming experiences, regardless of whether they are playing in flat 2D, 3D, or even 3D spanning across multiple platforms.

Both Epic Games and NVIDIA are committed to advancing the state of PC gaming, and this announcement is another step in that direction.

If you are at GDC this week, please visit us in the South Hall in booth #1701 for some on-hands demo time. Or, you can check out Epic Games in booth #202 and learn more about the Unreal Engine development platform.

Presentation at upcoming optical fiber communication conference in San Diego envisions future of broadband, where data is broadcast using desk [...]

Presentation at upcoming optical fiber communication conference in San Diego envisions future of broadband, where data is broadcast using desk lamps

WASHINGTON, March 10—In the future, getting a broadband connection might be as simple as flipping on a light switch. In fact, according to a group of researchers from Germany, the light coming from the lamps in your home could one day encode a wireless broadband signal.

“The advantage is that you’d be using light that is already there,” says Jelena Vučić of the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institute in Germany. Vučić and her colleagues have found a way to get the most from this synergy of illumination and information and will be presenting their findings during the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), which will take place March 21-25 in San Diego.

As of now, the majority of wireless in homes and businesses is achieved through a radio-frequency WiFi connection. But WiFi has limited bandwidth, and it’s unclear where to find more in the already-crowded radio spectrum. By contrast, visible-frequency wireless has all the bandwidth one could want. The signal would be generated in a room by slightly flickering all the lights in unison. No one would be bothered by this because the rate of modulation would be millions of times faster than a human eye can see. Since visible light can’t go through walls like radio, there would be no unwanted interference from stray signals and less worry of outside hackers.

Incandescent and fluorescent bulbs can’t flicker fast enough, so all the lights would have to be LEDs. Although commercial LEDs have a limited bandwidth of only a few MHz, Vučić and her colleagues were able to increase this bandwidth ten-fold by filtering out all but the blue part of the LED spectrum. With the visible wireless system built in their lab, they downloaded data at a rate of 100 Mbit/s. They have now upgraded the system’s receivers and are getting 230 Mbit/s, which is a record for visible wireless using commercial LEDs. Although state-of-the-art radio wireless can achieve comparable speeds, Vučić says they should be able to double their data rate again by employing a more sophisticated modulation signal.

###

The OFC/NFOEC 2010 talk, “230 Mbit/s via a Wireless Visible-Light Link Based on OOK Modulation of Phosphorescent White LEDs,” presentation OThH3, will take place from 9:30 – 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 25 in the San Diego Convention Center.

BEIJING – China’s top Internet regulator insisted Friday that Google must obey its laws or “pay the consequences,” giving no sign of a possible compromise in their dispute over censorship and hacking.

“If you want to do something that disobeys Chinese law and regulations, you are unfriendly, you are irresponsible and you will have to pay the consequences,” Li Yizhong, the minister of Industry and Information Technology, said on the sidelines of China’s annual legislature.

He gave no details of Beijing’s talks with Google Inc. over the search engine’s January announcement that it planned to stop complying with Chinese Internet censorship rules and might close its China-based site.

“Whether they leave or not is up to them,” Li said. “But if they leave, China’s Internet market is still going to develop.”

Li insisted that Beijing needs to censor Internet content to protect the rights of the country and its people.

“If there is information that harms stability or the people, of course we will have to block it,” he said

Responding to Google’s complaints of China-based hacking against its e-mail service and several dozen major companies, Li said the government opposes hacking.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Wednesday at a media conference in the United Arab Emirates that the Internet search company is in active negotiations with the Chinese government and expects some resolution in its dispute with Beijing soon.

Schmidt declined to provide specifics or predict how long the discussions would last, saying Google has decided not to publicize details of the talks.

The Chinese government has rejected suggestions by Western security experts that the Chinese military or government agencies might have been involved in the hacking.

“You cannot find evidence about who organizes such attacks. The Chinese government has repeatedly opposed and deterred hacking attacks,” Li said.

A few weeks ago, I blogged about our fix for throttling issues that some of our Studio XPS 1645 customers had experienced. In that post, I mentioned that there would be more information coming for customers with other systems. This post focuses on how we’re addressing throttling for Studio XPS 1647 customers.

Recently, we released a new BIOS update (revision A04) to correct throttling issues on our Studio XPS 1647 line. In the case of the Studio XPS 1647, a 90-watt AC adapter is sufficient to run the CPU and the GPU at full performance. With the older BIOS versions for the 1647 the amount of power that the system could draw from the adapter was limited, and in some cases that limitation caused slower performance. Version A04 raises that limit which allows the system to operate at full performance.

With the new A04 BIOS, based on testing completed by our engineering teams, we’re confident that customers will be able to push their Studio XPS 1647 laptops to performance levels they expect with a 90-watt adapter.

So, why is the 130-watt adapter suggested for some Studio XPS 1645 users, but not for Studio XPS 1647 users? The Studio XPS 1647 uses the newer Intel Arrendale processors which require less power to run efficiently. Because of this, the Studio XPS 1647 does not require the same level of power that some 1645 configurations do.

We do understand that some customers have reported that their 90-watt adapters get hot while powering their systems. In this case, you can contact Dell’s Technical Support to request a replacement 130-watt adapter. Please note that if you use your Studio XPS 1647 with a 130-watt adapter, it will not deliver any more power to your system than the 90-watt adapter.

Contacting Technical Support

In the United States, use phone numbers on this page to contact Dell Technical Support.

Outside of the United States:

Go to support.dell.com

At the very bottom of the page, select your country in the Choose a Country/Region field

Choose Contact Us on the left hand side

Click on the More Details link in the Contact Tech Support section

Click on the green Telephone button under the Call Tech Support section

Microsoft’s Bing software automatically censors itself in the Middle East, according to the The Open Net Initiative.

The outfit has released a report exposing Microsoft’s search engine Bing for censoring its site in the Middle East. The experiment showed that Bing “filters Arabic and English keywords that could yield sex or similar content.”

The boffins put an exhaustive list of Arabic and English keywords, in a variety of combinations, from inside Arab countries. Bing “left no stone unturned when it came to blocking words… having to do with homosexuality.”

It appears that the blocks are consistent with the policies of the respective countries in the Middle East and North Africa but at the same time insists that it is not filtering content. Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, have no internet censorship, and yet Microsoft has taken its own, prudish initiative.

Open standard 3D API specification available immediately; Provides performance, quality and flexibility [...]

Khronos Unleashes Cutting-Edge, Cross-Platform Graphics Acceleration with OpenGL 4.0

Open standard 3D API specification available immediately; Provides performance, quality and flexibility enhancements including tessellation and double precision shaders; Tight integration with OpenCL for seamless visual computing

March 11, 2010 – San Francisco, GDC 2010 – The Khronos™ Group today announced the release of the OpenGL® 4.0 specification; a significant update to the most widely adopted 2D and 3D graphics API (application programming interface) that is deployed on all major desktop operating systems. OpenGL 4.0 brings the very latest in cross-platform graphics acceleration and functionality to personal computers and workstations and the OpenGL standard serves as the basis for OpenGL® ES, the graphics standard on virtually every shipping smart phone.

The OpenGL 4.0 specification has been defined by the OpenGL ARB (Architecture Review Board) working group at Khronos, and includes the GLSL 4.00 update to the OpenGL Shading language in order to enable developers to access the latest generation of GPU acceleration with significantly enhanced graphics quality, acceleration performance and programming flexibility. This new release continues the rapid evolution of the royalty-free OpenGL standard to enable graphics developers to portably access cutting-edge GPU functionality across diverse operating systems and platforms. The full specification is available for immediate download at http://www.opengl.org/registry.

OpenGL 4.0 further improves the close interoperability with OpenCL™ for accelerating computationally intensive visual applications. OpenGL 4.0 also continues support for both the Core and Compatibility profiles first introduced with OpenGL 3.2, enabling developers to use a streamlined API or retain backwards compatibility for existing OpenGL code, depending on their market needs.

OpenGL 4.0 has been specifically designed to bring significant benefits to application developers, including:

two new shader stages that enable the GPU to offload geometry tessellation from the CPU;

per-sample fragment shaders and programmable fragment shader input positions for increased rendering quality and anti-aliasing flexibility;

drawing of data generated by OpenGL, or external APIs such as OpenCL, without CPU intervention;

shader subroutines for significantly increased programming flexibility;

separation of texture state and texture data through the addition of a new object type called sampler objects;

64-bit double precision floating point shader operations and inputs/outputs for increased rendering accuracy and quality;

performance improvements, including instanced geometry shaders, instanced arrays, and a new timer query.

Lastly, Khronos has simultaneously released an OpenGL 3.3 specification, together with a set of ARB extensions, to enable as much OpenGL 4.0 functionality as possible on previous generation GPU hardware; providing maximum flexibility and platform coverage for application developers. The full OpenGL 3.3 specification is also available for immediate download at http://www.opengl.org/registry

In addition to its new memory kits, Mushkin is also working on a Sandforce based SSD as well. The Calypso SSD series will feature a slower, and thus cheaper, Sandforce SF-1200 controller.

The Calypso SSD series will be available in 64, 128 and 256GB capacities and will feature maximum speeds somewhere around 260MB/s. The SF-1200 controller has maximum IOPS of around 10,000 with 4k blocks. According to Mushkin, the new Calypso series should be cheaper than SSDs based on Indilinx controller, and a lot of manufacturers are eager to jump on this Sandforce bandwagon.

The new Calypso SSD series should start to appear in the market later this month or sometime early next month. As for the faster SF-1500 controller, Mushkin is still waiting to see the situation on the SSD market, but it will come sooner or later.

Fermi dual in a few months, at the earliest

It looks like dual Fermi won’t be coming anytime soon. A few partners have said that at this time they are not aware that there will be a dual Fermi card and if Nvidia decides to make one, it won’t be close to March 27th’s single GF100 launch.

Dual Fermi can be expected hopefully towards the end of Q2 2010 and the high thermal dissipation and complexity of cards are few reasons for this postponement. Nvidia would definitely like to have dual cards out, but it might take a little while before it happens.

A good news is that mainstream and entry level Fermi versions should be coming this summer, slightly delayed from its original plan, but for the Dual card, it’s not certain when should it happen. Nvidia is not telling much to us or its partners either.

So in the next few months we guess that Radeon HD 5970 will remain the fastest card around and this is not something that Nvidia and its fearsome Jensen likes. You can be sure that Nvidia is not at all thrilled for this delay, but everything related to Fermi looks quite delayed and definitely doesn’t sound like a walk in the park, but apparently it’s possible.

By now you may have seen the update on our new PlayStation 3 motion controller, via our live video stream at GDC. In case you missed it, let me introduce you to ‘PlayStation Move’.

We first showed the ‘Move’ controller prototype at E3 in 2009 and we’re now ready with the final design, along with an early look at just a few of the upcoming games…

Take a look at our trailer below, which aims to explain PlayStation Move in more detail:

LINK TO MOVIE: Introducing PlayStation Move

Our launch games are designed to appeal to all PlayStation 3 fans. We’ve got our own take on social games such as ‘Sports Champions’ and ‘Move Party’ (both working titles) as well as keeping our more serious gamers in mind with DUKES and EA’s Tiger Woods 2010. Many of our existing franchises such as SOCOM will also be enhanced with PlayStation Move functionality – because of Move’s low performance impact on the PS3 system we’re able to add this to our existing games without compromising graphical quality or gameplay. The PlayStation Move experience will offer our players a fun, high definition and immersive gaming experience.

As you know, we’ve got a lot of experience working with motion and camera-based control systems, having created the original EyeToy for PlayStation 2 back in 2003. This experience has really helped make sure our new control system is incredibly accurate and responsive. PlayStation development teams are working hard to create a strong and exciting line-up of games – you’ll be hearing more about new titles in the coming months but for now, here is a list of the games we’ve announced so far:

GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE, San Francisco, March 10, 2010 – Intel Corporation today previewed platforms featuring the latest Intel® Core™ i7 Extreme Edition processor and announced the latest release of Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers (Intel® GPA) that will aid developers in optimizing game performance. In addition, Intel introduced a number of initiatives designed to spur innovation in the PC game developer community, and in support of the company’s Visual Adrenaline and Intel® Atom™ Developer programs.

Intel® Core™ i7 980X Processor Extreme Edition Preview
Intel is previewing its latest PC platform the Intel® Core™ i7-980X Extreme Edition processor, codenamed “Gulftown,” the first 32nm, six-core processor with 12 computing threads. In addition, Game Developers Conference (GDC) attendees can see and experience applications enhanced for this new platform – including newly released Sega* Napoleon Total War, the soon-to-be-released Ubisoft* RUSE, Geomerics* Enlighten and Cakewalk* Sonar – all by visiting the Intel booth (South Hall, Booth 1212) and Intel lounge area during the event.

Intel® GPA v3.0
Intel® GPA helps PC game developers analyze and optimize game performance on Intel® Architecture-based platforms. Intel GPA provides in-depth application analysis and customization that allows developers to easily pinpoint performance bottlenecks and optimize games for desktop PCs and laptops using Intel processors, chipsets and Intel® HD Graphics.

With Intel GPA v3.0, developers can ensure their titles run on the full spectrum of Intel® Core™ processors (e.g., Intel® Core™ i3, Intel® CoreTM i5 with Intel® HD Graphics, Intel® CoreTM i7, and Intel® Core™ i7 Extreme Edition) and chipsets with a new platform-focused toolset. The platform view for task-based multi-core optimizations and a simplified automated game launch workflow help developers save valuable time. The updated toolkit now includes support for DirectX 10.1 and 64-bit game executables.

Attendees can see and experience games enhanced using Intel® GPA and running on Intel® HD Graphics, including such titles as Atari* Star Trek Online, Electronic Arts* Tiger Woods Golf, and more in the Intel booth (South Hall, Booth 1212) at GDC.
Game Developer Contests and Initiatives
Level Up 2010
In its fifth year, the Level Up 2010 game demo contest is a worldwide competition focusing on the major areas of game development with prizes worth thousands of dollars. As part of the competition, developers have access to development resources that take advantage of Intel processing power and a chance to gain recognition in the industry.

All game entries will be judged in one of three categories: “Best Game for a Desktop,” “Best Game for a Laptop,” and “Best Game for a Netbook.” Finalists are also eligible to win prizes for “Best Sound Design,” “Best Art Design,” “Best Character Design” and “Best Graphics Performance.” Participants will have access to development kits and software tools to help them along the way. Judges for this year’s contest include industry notables Rick Raymo, Vic Davis, American McGee and Ralph Koster. Entries for the contest will be accepted through June 15, and developers can enter to win at www.intel.com/software/levelup2010.

Intel® Atom™ Developer Challenge Winners, Next Round Announced
Launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Intel AppUp Center beta, an application storefront for netbooks, has been met with excitement by developers. More than 5,000 developers have already joined the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program. Intel AppUp Center offers game developers access to the growing market opportunity for innovation on mobile devices, which has sparked the trend of “light gaming.” In line with this trend, about half of the applications submitted to Intel AppUp Center are games. The Intel Atom Developer Challenge was created to further engage with and recognize developers who submit the most innovative and elegant apps.

The first Intel Atom Developer Challenge has come to a close, and the grand prize winners have been named. Music app GURU won “Most Innovative App” and puzzle game SMILES took “Most Elegant Application Design.” Application developers Angus Hewlett and Michael Kasprzak each were awarded an all-expense-paid VIP trip to GDC 2010. The next round of the Intel Atom Developer Challenge has more categories with such prizes as tens of thousands of dollars, a 2011 Chevy* Volt* and a complete application marketing campaign. To participate, developers can download the Intel Atom Developer Program software development kit at appdeveloper.intel.com and enter the contest at appdeveloper.intel.com/challenge through Aug. 16, 2010.

StarCraft* II Open Game Play
Intel will showcase Blizzard* Entertainment’s StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty* at its booth (South Hall, Booth 1212), giving conference attendees a chance to play the game on a wide variety of Intel-based systems, from high-end Intel® Core™ i7 to mainstream Intel® Core™ i5 platforms, before it launches later this year

New SSD Delivers Both Performance and Exceptional Value to Consumers
SAN JOSE, CA—March 10, 2010—OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (OTCBB:OCZT), a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory and flash-based storage as an alternative to hard disk drives (HDDs), today unveiled the OCZ Onyx SATA II 2.5” Solid State Drive (SSD) Series, an ultra-affordable MultiLevel Cell (MLC)-based solid state storage solution designed for consumers looking to take advantage of flash-based storage technology. Offering a faster and more durable alternative to traditional hard drives in a cost-efficient SSD, the Onyx delivers reliable performance without the high price normally associated with SSD drives.

“As new technologies become available, OCZ continues to expand both our enterprise and consumer SSD lines, and one of our goals is to make SSDs more affordable to end-users. Our new Onyx series SSD does exactly that and is a perfect solution for netbooks, laptops, or home desktop PCs,” commented Ryan Petersen, CEO of the OCZ Technology Group. “Designed to offer the best of both worlds, the new OCZ Onyx SSD delivers the speed and reliability of solid state storage to mainstream consumers at an aggressive price point that makes the technology more accessible to customers who want to take advantage of all the benefits of the SSDs without incurring the high cost normally associated with the solution.”

With a sub 100 dollar MRSP the aggressively priced Onyx 32GB SSD delivers an enhanced computing experience with faster application loading, snappier data access, shorter boot-ups, and longer battery life. Onyx SSDs feature HDD-dominating access times, up to 125MB/s read and 70MB/s write speeds, 64MB of onboard cache, and unique performance optimization to keep the drives at peak performance over the long term.

OCZ Onyx SSD drives feature a durable yet lightweight housing, and because OCZ SSDs have no moving parts, the drives are more rugged than conventional hard drives. Available first in 32GB capacity the Onyx state drives are ideal for use as a boot up drive or for mobile PCs and Netbooks as a quality hard drive replacement. Designed for ultimate reliability, Onyx SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time between failure (MTBF), and OCZ also offers a leading 3-year warranty and award-winning technical support with the series, making SSDs a more viable upgrade for users requiring ultimate levels of customer service.

So like the title says since yesterday at 19:11 we got blocked from Google AdSense, a rather simple and non explaining mail got send and that is/was it:

Hallo,

https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=57153 .

Met vriendelijke groeten,

Het Google AdSense-team

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:

Hello,

We have checked our information and came to the conclution that your AdSense-account forms a big risk for our AdWords-advertisers. Because maintaining your account in our publishers network can lead to financial damages for our advertisers we have concluded to turn off your account

We hope that you understand that we find it a necessary step to protect out advertisers as well as our AdSense-publishers. We know this can lead to discomfort and want to thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation

If you have questions about your account and the measures we have taken we ask you not to respond to this e-mail. More information can be found on https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=57153 .

With kind regards,

The Google AdSense-team

So thats it, an e-mail with no information what so ever about the reason we got blocked. The funny thing about this is that Google itself send out optimization reports on how to improve your website in several ways to enhance the traffic flow yo your site. So for the new website/template we actually used the information send by Google to improve our website and the adds served by Google but as a result Google blocks the Ad-Sense account.

What did we do? We really have no idea. We replaced the Add’s to more strategic parts of the website so more different content could be served per add-block as users have more specific categories to surf trough now. We redid the meta info as we came to the conclusion that we were missing on allot of traffic related to the older DNA site and DNA-drivers again this can’t be a reason for a account block? We also updated the sitemap settings so news posted on Cell-Systems.net get indexed better and faster, again this is a point that Google itself says can improve traffic to the site.

We also blocked several/many adds that had nothing to do with the content posted on the Cell-Systems.net website (adds about Ford cars / Mobile phones / Travel agencies and much more) in our opinion something that helps Advertisers to get better and more direct adds served on Cell-Systems.net but it looks like Google thinks otherwise?

Another step we took was disabling Advertisements for Administrators on the website (this has always been the case even with the old website) this means that if someone with Moderator/Administrator status logs in on Cell-Systems.net no Add’s will be served for this account. We did this to prevent miss-clicks and extra page hits for the Adds again this is something that helps the Advertisers on Cell-Systems.net and not something that can lead to “financial damages” as Google states.

So what can we do about this block? To be honest Google doesn’t give much options to appeal their action/choise. All you can do is fill in a “Invalid activity appeal” this form hold several questions about the website (why do they even need this information again? They state in the e-mail that “We have checked our information and came to the conclution that your AdSense-account forms a big risk for our AdWords-advertisers”) we filled in the “Invalid activity appeal” form and have send it to Google as asked. A funny note about this form is that Google tells you that they might not even read the e-mail and that it will take at least one week for them to reply if they choose to.

It’s funny we get this block now as for the first time in 5 months we would actually receive our first payment. And as things are now these 5 months have been for nothing as with the block come no payment. One could ask itself why a website that get’s a payment of €75/€90 euro in 5/6 months even gets blocked for “Invalid activity” I for one don’t see anything “Invalid” about working hard on getting the latests news and modded drivers to our community and site visitors for the past 5/6 months.

We will now wait for the response from Google, till that time some empty adds are displayed (we have chosen to leave them as is for now, we do this on the case that someone from Google actually decides to visit the site so they can see how and where the adds are placed)

Kind regards,

Optimized for Video Storage and Playback, My Passport AV Media Drives are Designed to Work with Select Sony(R) Camcorders, Blu-ray Players and Other Popular Media Players

LAKE FOREST, Calif., March 10, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — WD(R) (NYSE: WDC), the world’s leader in external storage solutions, today introduced its new My Passport(TM) AV portable media drives. Designed specifically for video storage and playback, the new My Passport AV portable media drives deliver a plug-and-play experience for digital media enthusiasts. Available now at select retailers and WD’s online store, the My Passport AV portable media drive is offered with 320 GB of capacity.

A large and increasing number of game consoles, camcorders, TVs, DVRs, Blu-ray players and media players, including the WD TV(R) Media Player family, allow consumers to connect a USB drive and play the multimedia content from the drive on an HD TV. The My Passport AV portable media drive is designed to meet the requirements of this demanding video streaming environment. It delivers the formatting and low-power consumption that assures out-of-the-box compatibility with many leading CE (consumer electronics) devices.

WD worked to ensure that the My Passport AV portable media drives operate seamlessly with the Direct Copy feature offered in Sony’s new Handycam(R) video recorders. Direct Copy lets Handycam users offload and archive HD video directly to a My Passport AV portable media drive without a computer, creating room to shoot more HD videos when their Handycam hard drive becomes full.

Consumers can then play back their stored videos using Sony’s latest Blu-ray players or any of the WD TV media players by just connecting the My Passport AV portable media drive via the USB port on these players. Specific Handycam and Blu-ray model compatibility information is available on the WD Web site.

With its small footprint, the My Passport AV portable media drives are designed to fit neatly in a home entertainment center. The included stand and extra long cable makes it easy to position the drive neatly in entertainment centers, maximizing the airflow and minimizing heat around the drive.

“With more and more devices capable of generating and playing back HD video – camcorders, Blu-ray players, game consoles – portable hard drives are the best solution for this 8 GB-per-hour capacity-intensive content. The My Passport AV portable media drive is optimized for a better digital video experience with a growing list of consumer electronics, starting with Sony’s latest camcorders and Blu-ray players,” said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD’s branded products group.

Price and Availability

The New My Passport AV portable media drives feature a 2-year limited warranty and are available now at select retail stores and WD’s online store. MSRP for the My Passport AV portable media drive with 320 GB is $109.99 USD.

I feel for Google – Steve Jobs threatened to sue me, too.

In 2003, after I unveiled a prototype Linux desktop called Project Looking Glass*, Steve called my office to let me know the graphical effects were “stepping all over Apple’s IP.” (IP = Intellectual Property = patents, trademarks and copyrights.) If we moved forward to commercialize it, “I’ll just sue you.”

My response was simple. “Steve, I was just watching your last presentation, and Keynote looks identical to Concurrence – do you own that IP?” Concurrence was a presentation product built by Lighthouse Design, a company I’d help to found and which Sun acquired in 1996. Lighthouse built applications for NeXTSTEP, the Unix based operating system whose core would become the foundation for all Mac products after Apple acquired NeXT in 1996. Steve had used Concurrence for years, and as Apple built their own presentation tool, it was obvious where they’d found inspiration. “And last I checked, MacOS is now built on Unix. I think Sun has a few OS patents, too.” Steve was silent.

And that was the last I heard on the topic. Although we ended up abandoning Looking Glass, Steve’s threat didn’t figure into our decision (the last thing enterprises wanted was a new desktop – in hindsight, exactly the wrong audience to poll (we should’ve been asking developers, not CIO’s)).

As in life, bluster and threat are commonplace in business – especially the technology business. So that interaction was good preparation for a later meeting with Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. They’d flown in over a weekend to meet with Scott McNealy, Sun’s then CEO – who asked me and Greg Papadopoulos (Sun’s CTO) to accompany him. As we sat down in our Menlo Park conference room, Bill skipped the small talk, and went straight to the point, “Microsoft owns the office productivity market, and our patents read all over OpenOffice.” OpenOffice is a free office productivity suite found on tens of millions of desktops worldwide. It’s a tremendous brand ambassador for its owner – it also limits the appeal of Microsoft Office to businesses and those forced to pirate it. Bill was delivering a slightly more sophisticated variant of the threat Steve had made, but he had a different solution in mind. “We’re happy to get you under license.” That was code for “We’ll go away if you pay us a royalty for every download” – the digital version of a protection racket.

Royalty bearing free software? Jumbo shrimp. (Oxymoron.)

But fearing this was on the agenda, we were prepared for the meeting. Microsoft is no stranger to imitating successful products, then leveraging their distribution power to eliminate a competitive threat – from tablet computing to search engines, their inspiration is often obvious (I’m trying to like Bing, I really am). So when they created their web application platform, .NET, it was obvious their designers had been staring at Java – which was exactly my retort. “We’ve looked at .NET, and you’re trampling all over a huge number of Java patents. So what will you pay us for every copy of Windows?” Bill explained the software business was all about building variable revenue streams from a fixed engineering cost base, so royalties didn’t fit with their model… which is to say, it was a short meeting.

I understand the value of patents – offensively and, more importantly, for defensive purposes. Sun had a treasure trove of some of the internet’s most valuable patents – ranging from search to microelectronics – so no one in the technology industry could come after us without fearing an expensive counter assault. And there’s no defense like an obvious offense.

But for a technology company, going on offense with software patents seems like an act of desperation, relying on the courts instead of the marketplace. See Nokia’s suit against Apple for a parallel example of frivolous litigation – it hasn’t slowed iPhone momentum (I’d argue it accelerated it). So I wonder who will be first to claim Apple’s iPad is stepping on their IP… perhaps those that own the carcass of the tablet computing pioneer Go Corp.? Except that would be AT&T. Hm.

Having watched this movie play out many times, suing a competitor typically makes them more relevant, not less. Developers I know aren’t getting less interested in Google’s Android platform, they’re getting more interested – Apple’s actions are enhancing that interest.

Sun was sued numerous times – most big companies are sued almost constantly by entities or actors whose sole focus is suing others. Groups with no business focus other than litigating patent suits are affectionately known as trolls – pure litigation entities. (For good humor, read this, an application to patent the act of trolling. If granted, it would give the patent holder a reciprocal claim against a patent troll.)

The most egregious of such suits was filed against Sun by Kodak (yes, the film photography people).

Egregious, because Kodak had acquired a patent from a defunct computer maker (Wang) for the exclusive purpose of suing Sun over an esoteric technology, Java Remote Method Invocation (“Java RMI” – not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Kodak”). Given how immature Kodak’s technology business was (they were just starting out in the digital world), we had little we could respond with – I suppose we could’ve hunted for a Wang-like opportunity to hit at their core, but Kodak was a customer, which certainly complicated things, and the time and expense involved would’ve been prohibitive.

Their case was eventually heard before a jury in Rochester, New York, famous for being home to… the Eastman Kodak company. Lo and behold, the local jury decided Sun should pay Kodak more than a hundred million dollars. So here’s something I could never say as Sun’s CEO.

I prefer SmugMug.

LAS VEGAS, January 6, 2010 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, unveiled [...]

LAS VEGAS, January 6, 2010 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, unveiled today the next generation of its award-winning LED back-lit TVs, featuring a first of its kind built-in 3D processor, connected interactive experiences and innovative, trend-setting designs with a wide range of options to match the décor of almost any living room. This year’s flagship Series, the 9000, has proudly won the 2010 CES Best of Innovations award. Perhaps most notably, Samsung offers its most versatile LED TV lineup, which consists of entry level HD offerings to its highest performing full HD TV’s ever, in a variety of screen sizes. Samsung’s latest HDTVs will be on display at Booth #11026 during the International Consumer Electronics Show, which will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 7 -10, 2010.

“Our leadership in the LED TV category is no accident; we identified a consumer need for superior picture quality, ultra slimness and more eco-friendly energy consumption,” said Yangkyu Kim, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Division for Samsung Electronics. “We have put all our energy and passion into this year’s LED TV lineup with the single objective to deliver stunning experiences that bring life-like depth to TV. With this award-winning lineup, Samsung is once again setting the industry standard not only for quality TV experiences but for technology and innovation leadership.”

With eight product series, and screen sizes ranging from 19” to 65”, this is the industry’s largest lineup of LED TVs to date. From the award-winning 9000 Series, to the Innovations Honoree 7000 and 6500 Series, consumers have virtually unlimited choice of models to fit their individual entertainment preferences and lifestyle. The flagship 9000 series specifically is flat-out Samsung’s most impressive HDTV to date – the quintessential slim LED TV with a premium touch-screen remote control and built-in 3D technology, setting a new standard for jaw-dropping home theater picture quality and connectivity. The world’s slimmest fully integrated LED TV, the 9000 Series was designed to end all depth competitions, and raise the bar yet again with an innovative stand that includes the built-in tuner.

Built-in 3D
New in 2010, this year’s premium models in the LED TV lineup, the 7000, 8000 and 9000, all include Samsung’s proprietary built-in 3D processor and emitter that is optimized for, and enables compatibility with multiple 3D standards including half and full HD resolution formats as well as the Blu-ray Disc Association approved “Blu-ray 3D” standard. In addition, Samsung’s 3D system delivers a picture using a full color spectrum for an unbelievable, immersive viewing experience.

Along with the company’s 3D Blu-ray player (BD-C6900), Samsung offers a complete solution allowing consumers to bring the 3D theater experience home. For those who want to add the third dimension to their regular TV viewing, Samsung included in its 3D processor an auto-conversion technology that renders 2D content into 3D in real time. Consumers can add a level of depth and clarity to a live football game, making them believe they are part of the action.

Connected TV and Samsung Apps
With built-in Ethernet connection and wireless-ready capabilities, the 2010 LED TV lineup is ready to meet the growing consumer demand for “content without borders.” The upgraded Internet@TV feature now includes Samsung Apps, providing consumers with an expanded, easy to navigate selection of content and applications from leading services like Accedo Broadband, AccuWeather.com, The Associated Press, Blockbuster, Fashion TV, Netflix, Picasa, Pandora, Rovi, Travel Channel, Twitter, USA TODAY, and Vudu. Applications can be downloaded and viewed all while watching TV. All of the premium LED TVs, 6500 Series and above, will include the upgraded Internet@TV with Samsung Apps.

Unsurpassed Picture Quality
Samsung’s premium LED TV’s will boast unsurpassed picture quality by using a Samsung-developed technology that merges the advantages of LED edge-lighting with the control of local dimming technology in directly back-lit LED televisions. This technology along with Samsung’s high-efficiency LED light source and proprietary picture enhancement engine with video processor ensure unsurpassed picture quality with vibrant colors, deep blacks and better contrast ratios.

Focus on Design
In 2010, Samsung builds on its tradition of innovative design by introducing narrower bezels and brushed metal frames in silver and black– pushing the limits beyond the familiar black bezels of many HDTV’s. In particular, Samsung developed a groundbreaking four-legged quad stand that makes the TV look more like furniture than device and a new “mystic earth” Touch of Color™ (ToC™) design scheme with chrome edging to better match a living room’s décor. With a wide-ranging pallet of materials and designs, Samsung offers something for virtually anyone’s tastes and interior design preferences. What’s more, the new LED TVs match Samsung’s 2010 line of Blu-ray players and home theater systems bringing a cohesive element to a home entertainment room.

Green Design
All these functionalities are delivered without compromising on the energy efficiency that Samsung LED TVs are known for and meet even higher standards of sustainability. They all exceed the more stringent EnergyStar® 4.0 guidelines. Samsung LED TVs are the highest performing and eco-conscious HDTV products Samsung has ever released, continuing to set new standards every year.

Redefining the Remote
In another industry first, Samsung developed an easy to use on-board TV display full touch-screen remote control. The remote’s color touch-screen makes understanding features and options easy and simple. Its integrated Wi-Fi and infrared technology controls TV and AV devices with the on-screen buttons and QWERTY keyboard. It allows users to watch broadcast content directly on the remote so you can watch the first part of the big game, while a Blu-ray movie is just wrapping up on the large screen HDTV(9000 Series only). You can also browse music, photos, and video files from a DLNA certified PC then swipe the chosen content in the direction of the TV to enjoy on the larger screen (9000 Series only). The remote is the primary remote control for the 9000 Series and a derivative version of it is sold separately as an option for other LED TV models including the 7000 and 8000 Series.

Game Developers Conference, San Francisco, Calif. – March 9, 2010 – Today at the Game Developers Conference, Razer, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-end precision gaming and lifestyle peripherals, and Sixense Entertainment, the developer of superior motion control technologies, announced that the Ultra-Precise Motion Controller SDK (Software Development Kit) and FPS (First Person Shooter) utility library are now available for download from Steam, the leading platform for PC games and digital entertainment.

“As the industry leader in computer interface design, it was a priority for us to enable and equip developers with the tools necessary to create new games and to port favorite titles for the Ultra- Precise Motion Controller, and the SDK and FPS utility library do just that,” said Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff, president, Razer USA. “I’m personally very excited to see the games that developers will create that take advantage of six degrees of freedom, but I’m also eager to experience some of my favorite games in a whole new dimension.” Designed specifically with developers in mind, the SDK and FPS utility library require virtually no knowledge of the inner workings of the controller, allowing developers to effortlessly create a totally immersive gaming experience that takes advantage of a full six degrees of motion with ease. Porting games is similarly straightforward, as the FPS utility library provides quick and convenient access to update classic games and bring them into a brave new realm.

“Our SDK computes its exact position (X-Y-Z) and orientation (pitch-roll-yaw) to the nearest millimeter and degree and reports these values to the game with no shadowing and no drift. In gaming this instant response is the difference between instructing a character to do something and actually being that character,” said Jeff Bellinghausen, CTO, Sixense. “To give you an idea, with Valve’s support, we were able to fully integrate the SDK with our FPS Utility Library into Left 4 Dead 2 in less than two weeks.” Through the Razer and Sixense partnership with Valve®, the SDK and FPS utility library will be available from the Steam network, allowing instant access to all the tools necessary to begin game development for the motion sensing platform.

“The Ultra-Precise Motion Controller offers gamers a new way to interact with the games they love and we are excited to give developers’ easy access to the SDK and FPS library on Steam” said Greg Coomer, product design lead, Valve. “Together with Razer and Sixense, we are designing new, more enjoyable gameplay mechanics in Left 4 Dead 2, as well as future Valve titles.”

“Steam was an easy choice for distributing the Ultra-Precise Motion Controller SDK to developers. Besides being the leading destination for millions of gamers, Steam is focused on serving PC developers,” said Amir Rubin, CEO, Sixense. “We will continue to partner with game developers around the world to provide the best gaming experiences.” Game developers who are interested in downloading the SDK for porting their current games or developing future games based on the new motion sensing platform can go to the “Tools” tab on Steam, or write to gamedevrelations@razerzone.com for further information or check out the official site at www.razerzone.com/motionsensing/.

The third release of the Android Native Development Kit (NDK) is now available for download from the Android developer site.

It can be used to target devices running Android 1.5 and higher. In addition to a few bug fixes and improvements, this release includes the following new features:

Toolchain improvement

The toolchain binaries have been refreshed for this release with GCC 4.4.0, which should generate slightly more compact and efficient machine code than the previous one (4.2.1).

Note that the GCC 4.4.0 C++ frontend is more pedantic, and may refuse to compile certain rare and invalid template declarations that were accepted by 4.2.1. To alleviate the problem, this NDK still provides the 4.2.1 binaries, which can optionally be used to build your machine code.

OpenGL ES 2.0 support

Applications targeting Android 2.0 (API level 5) or higher can now directly access OpenGL ES 2.0 features. This brings the ability to control graphics rendering through vertex and fragment shader programs, using the GLSL shading language.

A new trivial sample, named “hello-gl2″, demonstrates how to render a simple triangle using both shader types.

Name simplification

This NDK release is just called “r3″, for “Revision 3″, to indicate that it is not limited to a specific Android platform/API level. Some developers thought that the previous release’s name (1.6_r1) was confusing and indicated that it could only be used to target Android 1.6, which was not true.

Enjoy!

Computerworld - Responding to reports last week that its European ballot screen was not truly randomizing the positions of the top [...]

Computerworld - Responding to reports last week that its European ballot screen was not truly randomizing the positions of the top five browsers, Microsoft today said it has changed the algorithm that shuffles the spots.

“We can confirm that we made a change to the random icon order algorithm in the browser choice screen for Europe,” said Microsoftspokesman Kevin Kutz today. “We are confident the algorithm change will be an improvement.”

The browser ballot, which began to show last week in the Windows Update queues of European users, was mandated by an agreement Microsoft reached last year with European Union antitrust regulators. The ballot appears on Windows PCs where Internet Explorer (IE) is set as the default browser, and lets users download and install rivals, including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari and others.

Last week, Rob Weir, an IBM software architect who had tested the ballot screen’s randomization, accused Microsoft of sloppy programming that skewed the results toward Google’s Chrome, most often put IE in the fifth spot at the far right, and gave Opera an edge over Firefox for the first position.

Weir noticed the improved algorithm last Saturday. “Sometime last week — I don’t know the exact date — Microsoft updated the code for the browser choice website with a new random shuffle algorithm,” Weir said in an entry on his personal blog.

His tests of the new algorithm showed that the chances of a browser ending up in each of the five top spots on the ballot are essentially equal. “This looks fine to me,” Weir concluded.

Weir has posted a revamped HTML file that uses the new algorithm to test the ballot; users can run the test by entering an iteration count. To most accurately mimic the actual ballot, the HTML file should be run with IE.

Leading Gaming Service Expands to Mac Platform

March 8, 2010 – Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve’s gaming service, and Source, Valve’s gaming engine, to the Mac.

Steam and Valve’s library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April.

“As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients,” said Gabe Newell, President of Valve. “The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services.”

“Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac,” said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. “Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play.”

“We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation,” said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. “The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows.”

Portal 2 will be Valve’s first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows. “Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step,” said Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead. “We’re always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac.”

Support for the Mac in Source and Steamworks is available to third parties immediately. Interested developers should contact Jason Holtman at jasonh@valvesoftware.com.

Ripping apart the FPS in an orgy of bullets and destruction, Bodycount™ is the new game in production at Codemasters Studios Guildford.

Designed by Creative Director Stuart Black (co-creator and designer of Black, 2006), Bodycount is being created for the Xbox 360® and PlayStation®3 and scheduled for release early next year.

In Bodycount you become ensnared in a clandestine global power struggle as a powerful combat asset with a green-light to eliminate enemies known only as ‘Targets’ on behalf of the ‘Network’. Equipped with a mouth-watering selection of contemporary weapons, you and opponents tear through destructible cover to execute explosive kills in a shreddable world where operatives are encouraged to leave no witnesses. Complimented by online multiplayer and co-operative game modes, Bodycount will blast outrageous action and spectacular fire-fights from both barrels.

“We’re all massive FPS fans,” said Stuart Black, Creative Director on Bodycount “and believe that there’s room for a refresh of the shooter experience. If Race Driver: GRID™ was all about the purity of racing, then everything in Bodycount is absolutely centred on the bullet and its impact on the world. Our shredding tech enables us to create a different kind of gameplay, where players and AI can’t hide behind indestructible cover and rely on whack-a-mole mechanics. Here the environment is constantly changing as the game world is shot to hell; it’s going to be a huge amount of fun.”

Intel’s Dan Snyder had a public comment for us today about our “Newegg Selling Fake Intel CPUs” story reported here late Friday.

Intel has been made aware of the potential for counterfeit i7 920 packages in the marketplace and is working to how many and/or where they are being sold. The examples we have seen are not Intel products but are counterfeits. Buyers should contact their place of purchase for a replacement and/or should contact their local law enforcement agency if the place of purchase refuses to help.

This statement flies directly in the face of what Newegg is telling us.

After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units.

Someone is not telling the truth. And to cap it all off, it seems as though HardOCP is being threatened by D&H Distributing, as it was reported to us, the company that shipped Newegg the fake CPUs. The full story can be found at this link.

The RSA 2010 Security Conference is just finishing up here in San Francisco, and I’m struck by how many of [...]

The RSA 2010 Security Conference is just finishing up here in San Francisco, and I’m struck by how many of the conference sessions and keynotes have warned about the threat that socially engineered malware poses to the security of the Internet. Malware has become the scourge of the Internet, and it’s not just the security experts who are worried—the top story in my morning paper yesterday described how a typical malware attack compromised a financial firm’s network. Our data shows that one out of every 250 downloads is the result of a user being tricked into downloading malware to their PC.

We’re proud of the protection SmartScreen® Filter provides to protect IE8 users from such attacks, and I’d like share some of the latest numbers on our level of protection.

Since we launched IE8 in March 2009, SmartScreen has blocked over 560 million attempts to download malware, recently averaging over 3 million blocks per day! Hosted in datacenters around the world, SmartScreen’s URL Reputation Service (URS) has evaluated over 250 billion URLs to help keep IE8 users safe from malware. Even more impressively, since IE7’s Phishing Filter was introduced in 2005, the URS has processed over 5.7 trillion requests to block malicious web sites. Every day, Microsoft receives around 300 million telemetry reports from IE8 users and processes 4.1 billion URLs looking for malicious websites and files. On the back end, our systems and analysts evaluate over 1 terabyte of binaries every day to help identify sites delivering malware.

The Q1 2010 NSS Lab’s test shows that Microsoft’s continued investment in SmartScreen is paying off. Since launch, IE8’s SmartScreen Filter has continued to improve its protection against Socially Engineered Malware threats.

IE6 and 7 don’t provide protection against socially-engineered malware. If your family and friends aren’t up-to-date, please encourage them to upgrade to IE 8 for a safer Internet experience.

While IE8 offers the best built-in protection any browser offers against socially engineered malware, you still should follow best-practices to stay safe online. For instance:

Enable SmartScreen Filter using IE8’s Safety menu ().

Install antivirus and antispyware software from trusted sources and keep it up-to-date. Microsoft Security Essentials is available for free.

Turn on your firewall.

Enable Automatic Updates for Windows and other Microsoft software using Microsoft Update.

Keep your computer’s other software, including browser add-ons, up-to-date.

Before downloading software, consider the risks and be aware of the fine print. For example, make sure the license agreement does not conceal a warning that you are about to install software with unwanted behavior.

You can read more tips and learn about common Internet attacks over on the Security Tips blog.

Stay safe out there!

New 1U Rack-mounted Models are Datacenter Friendly with Intel® Atom D510 Dual-core Processors, iSCSI for Business, Low Power Consumption, and are Fully VMware® Certified

Taipei, Taiwan, March, 2010 – QNAP Systems, Inc., a leading manufacturer of world class NAS servers, NVR Video Surveillance Systems, and Network-based Video Players today expanded their popular Business Series Turbo NAS lineup with two new 1U rack-mounted, 4-drive models, the TS-459U-RP and TS-459U-SP. These new models, with up to 8TB of storage (using 2TB hard drives), have been certified as compatible with VMware’s vSphere4 (ESX 4.0) virtualization platform, ideal for departmental file sharing, storage, and advanced server applications in the office environment. VMware’s vSphere is the industry’s first cloud operating system that offers a way to reduce IT costs and increase responsiveness. Shared networked storage is an essential component of a cloud computing infrastructure. The TS-459U-RP and TS-459U-SP incorporate the Intel® Atom™ D-510 1.66Ghz dual-core processor and feature 1GB of DDRII RAM , delivering exceptional performance and high reliability for multiple concurrent tasks and intensive data transfer with lower power consumption. Businesses of all sizes are able to enjoy the interoperability between VMware virtual machines and QNAP high performance storage to take the advantages of VMware cloud computing environments.

“QNAP’s commitment to delivering SMB, Corporate, and entry-level Enterprise customers exactly what they need, and nothing they do not shine through with the TS-459U-SP and TS-459U-RP models” said Laurent Cheng, Product Manager of QNAP Systems, Inc. “These new Business Series models provide businesses of all sizes a solid foundation for their network storage needs and a host of business-critical applications.” Mr. Cheng added.

The new models are differentiated with the TS-459U-RP containing redundant power supplies. Should one power supply fail, the other will continue to supply the power for the entire system and alert the administrator via email or SMS to the failure. Both models support advanced features including DOM architecture with fail-safe dual OS, scheduled power on/off, Wake on LAN, and HDD S.M.A.R.T,

The new models come pre-installed with version 3.2 of the QNAP NAS management software which supports lots of class-leading new features such as iSCSI service; supports SPC-3 Persistent Reservation for clustering in VMware and Hyper-V clusters in Windows Server 2008. MPIO and MC/S are also supported. As well as new DFS support (Shared Folder Aggregation), import of user-list, the next-generation Internet Protocol, IPv6, has been incorporated for future networking evolution. QNAP’s Web File Manager 2 features an entirely redesigned user interface and functionality for improved file sharing and management. WebDAV is also available for users to collaboratively share, access, and edit files over HTTP and HTTPS. Additionally, Apple Time Machine backups are now supported.

Availability
The new TS-459U-RP and TS-459U-SP Business Series Turbo NAS servers are available from March through QNAP global commercial distributors, resellers, and retailers.

That’s right we are back up and running.

As most of you can see the site has undergone a major face lift. Besides the site template server other changes have been made to make it more easy for everybody (we hope) to navigate and browse the website. Below we have a small chart of what are the major changes on/to the site

Template / Looks

The looks of the site are totally new, nothing from the previous template made it into the new one, we hope everybody likes the new site design and functionality that comes along with it, more information about the changes will follow below so keep reading. We made the choice to keep 1 design and color scheme for now but more color scheme’s are planned for the near future.

Forums

The forums have been deleted, it was getting to complicated to keep wordpress and bbpress running in sync, each and every wp/bb-p update also meant we had to change a dozen plugins. For these reasons and the notice that bb-press is planned to be recoded to become a wordpress plugin we are dropping it for now. This will save allot of SQL usage/queries so we can keep the site and it’s data small and fast and this is a benefit for everybody.

Share and Enjoy

Re-tweet and Facebook options have been added to the (news)posts. This allows users to share news from Cell-Systems.net quick and easy. The social bookmark icons are now hidden by default inside the post template and can be found underneath the “Share This” button. So if you like Cell-Systems.net and it’s content why not share it with your friends e-buddys or family?

Downloads

We also updated the downloads with a download counter and a last updated function. This will show how many times a file has been downloaded and when the file was build (the build time of the file itself not the upload time to the server) This download counter will be added to each and every Cell-Systems.net made file

donators only

Get exclusive download charts on the Server status page, access can be found in your MEMBER PANEL under the Donators Section

Script snippets

A new Cell-Systems.net Project/Category has been added “Script Snippets” within this category various PHP and JAVA script sample/examples can be found and run from within the page (Only registered members can see the PHP code being executed) more scripts/script types will be added in the near future.

Categories

New categories have been added and old ones have been moved around a bit. This allowes us to categorise news more precise and keep everybody up to date on the news they like/want to be informed about.

Comments markup editor

The default WordPress editor has been replaced with a Cell-Systems.net customized markItUp! markup editor

Subscribe

Registered members can subscribe to categories now. Want to stay up to date on your favorite news, be sure to check the right catagories in your user panel. Quote and Code buttons have been added to make placing comments allot more easy.

Notes

ToDo:
Finish the logo
Some small cosmetic changes to the template
Some donators functions
* more stats
Re-categorize old news post
Any suggestions, criticism and/or feedback to enhance the website
Drivers:
Due to the work on the website the Cell-Systems.net drivers have a small delay stay tuned for new releases asap.

Kind regards:

A wide rash of game-crashing errors is spreading among the PS3-owning community at the moment, most of which can be chalked [...]

A wide rash of game-crashing errors is spreading among the PS3-owning community at the moment, most of which can be chalked up to a 8001050F error code. This has led to a variety of unfortunate side-effects for those affected, including corrupted trophy information and an inability to access the PSN. When combined, those two issues prevent players from launching certain games, such as Heavy Rain, without being kicked back to the XMB.

We’ve contacted Sony to find out what’s causing the issue, and when we can expect to get back to chasing down the Origami Killer. He might just be able to make a clean getaway while we suffer through this downtime.

Update: Sony has acknowledged the issue, and is “looking into it.” We’ve yet to hear an official word on what the problem is, though it seems to be a bit larger than just the PSN. Owners of PS3 Phats are reporting that the date on their console has reverted to 12/31/1999, which is likely the cause of the data-corrupting errors. Some Phat-owners have reported receiving the errors while their console was offline, which is upsetting, to say the least. We’ll let you know when we hear official word from Sony.

Most companies, when they go to the enormous expense of designing a complex chip, tell everyone about it. Even a [...]

Most companies, when they go to the enormous expense of designing a complex chip, tell everyone about it. Even a company like Sun or IBM, whose chips are used only in their own computers, unveil the details of their new processors well before products based on those new parts come to market. This is true for game consoles, for SoCs of all flavors, for PC chips, and for most of the rest of the semiconductor industry. It’s not, however, true for Apple.

Since the unveiling of the iPad last month, all the public has learned about the application processor that powers the device is a two-letter name: A4. The rest of the details have been treated as Top Secret, and this secrecy has stoked plenty of speculation, some of it reasonable and some of it completely and totally unhinged.

Why has Apple been so secretive about the A4? Why hasn’t the company presented a paper on the device at ISSCC, or published a whitepaper?

I don’t know the answer to these questions, but given what I do know about the A4, I suspect that the reason is twofold. First—and this is purely my supposition—Steve Jobs just loves secrets. The A4 no doubt gives him that special, “I have my very own custom SoC that you don’t know anything about” feeling, and if we’re honest with ourselves, wouldn’t we all love to know what it’s like to have that feeling? I know I would.

The second, and perhaps most likely reason behind Apple’s silence, is that the A4 just isn’t anything to write home about—and on this second point, I actually know a thing or two. If Apple were to tell you what’s in the A4, most of the focus would be on what the chip is not, rather than on what the iPad is.

Meet the A4

As I watched the videos and read the reports of the iPad in action at the launch event, I was thoroughly convinced that the device was built on the out-of-order Cortex A9, possibly even a dual-core version. But it turns out that the the A4 is a 1GHz custom SoC with a single Cortex A8 core and a PowerVR SGX GPU. The fact that A4 uses a single A8 core hasn’t been made public, but I’ve heard from multiple sources who are certain for different reasons that this is indeed the case. (I wish I could be more specific, but I can’t.)

In all, the A4 is quite comparable to the other Cortex A8-based SoCs that are coming onto the market, except that the A4 has even less hardware. The iPad doesn’t have much in the way of I/O, so the A4 itself can do away with the I/O that it doesn’t need. In contrast, the typical Cortex A8-based SoC has more I/O hardware than a mobile phone can use, because you never know what customers will need which interface types.

For instance, an A8-based SoC like the Freescale i.MX51 shown above has an infrared block, three UART blocks for serial communication (RS232 and the like), four USB blocks, and a keypad controller, to name just a few. Of these, the iPad probably needs only one USB port and one UART for serial connections, both of which are wired to the 30-pin connector (assuming that this is the same 30-pin connector as the iPhone). The multitouch input controller will interface with the chip via either a USB port or a serial port (I looked at the datasheet for the STM32TS60, which can do either USB or serial), so perhaps there’s another port for that purpose.

Apple’s 30-pin connector supports TV-out, but no external display attachment has been announced for the device, so it’s possible that the SoC forgoes the common TV-out I/O block and related support for a secondary display. (Apparently the latest rumors from the SDK indicate that there is external display support, and at least one company has announced an adaptor.)

Another common SoC set of blocks that the A4 probably does without are related to still and video camera support. Apple’s iPad may well be the only Cortex A8-device to come to market without any type of camera built in, so Apple has probably ditched some dedicated image processing blocks.

While it’s fun to speculate about what Apple didn’t include in the A4, the ultimate point is this: with one 30-pin connector on the bottom and no integrated camera of any kind, the A4 needs a lot less in the way of I/O support than comparable chips that are intended for smartphones or smartbooks. This means that the A4 is just a GPU, a CPU, memory interface block (NAND and DDR), possibly security hardware, system hardware, and a few I/O controllers. It’s lean and mean to a degree that isn’t possible with an off-the-shelf SoC.

What was the role of P.A. Semi?

So if Apple just licensed the A8 and didn’t design a custom CPU core, then what was the point of the P.A. Semi acquisition? The answer to this question is still unclear.

Apple bought P.A. Semi in late April 2008. A little over a year isn’t near enough time to do a new core design around the ARMv7 architecture. Something like Qualcomm’s Scorpion core, which is a custom implementation of ARM v7 that’s comparable to the A8, but with a wider SIMD engine and a deeper pipeline, was a multiyear project. I could easily imagine that Apple is working on something comparable to Scorpion, but this wouldn’t be ready for a while.

If they were involved at all in the A4 design, and it’s still not 100 percent clear that they were, it’s likely that the P.A. Semi team made its biggest contribution to the A4 in the area of dynamic power optimization.

The PWRficient chip that the P.A. Semi team unveiled in late 2005 achieved miraculous levels of efficiency through pervasive use of power and clock gating. Power gating is a relatively straightforward technique that involves shutting down the parts of a chip that aren’t in use. It’s harder to implement in practice than it sounds, though, because you have to divide the chip up into blocks that can be put to sleep and awakened independently. You also have to size and arrange those blocks so that the extra delay involved in entering and exiting sleep states doesn’t screw up the chip’s overall timing. These delay and timing issues make power gating hard to implement in high-speed processors, which is why the amount of power gating that the PWRficient processor used was remarkable for a high-performance processor.

Clock gating is the other technique that PWRficient used extensively, and it also comes with its own challenges. The clock distribution network can account for up to half the dynamic power draw in a modern SoC. Clock gating is a method for pruning the clock tree by cutting off the clock to parts of the chip that don’t need it at a particular moment.

The exact degree to which the A4 uses either of these two techniques won’t be clear until Apple does a big reveal, and that may not ever happen. But even if they’re not extensively used in the current A4, these techniques are very likely to be a larger part of future iterations or variants of the processor.

Speaking of variants, it’s entirely possible that the majority of the P.A. Semi team’s efforts are going not into an iPad chip, but into an SoC for the iPhone. Because the iPad’s LCD is so large and its power draw so great relative to the other components, it’s hard to imagine that the A4 gives the iPad more than a few percent battery life advantage vs. a chip like the Snapdragon—in the grand scheme of things for a tablet device, the extra hardware that chips like the Snapdragon and the i.MX515 have on A4 probably doesn’t matter a whole lot. But a chip that’s really aggressively optimized for the iPhone might give the phone a real battery life and performance advantage over the competition.

The iPad as Wii, or, “it’s the software, stupid”

In the end, I keep coming back to the idea that Apple has stayed quiet about the A4 because any real magic or “wow factor” that the iPad delivers will come from the software—the efficiency of the OS, the user interface design of the OS and apps, and the snappiness of the overall experience all come from the software team.

In this respect, the iPad is actually a lot like the Mac. The Mac combines commodity hardware with great industrial design and a superior user experience. The iPad aims to do the same, but under a new compute paradigm that replaces the venerable keyboard-and-monitor combo with a slate form factor, and the decades-old WIMP-based UI (Windows Icons Menus Pointer) with multitouch.

Perhaps an even better analogue for the iPad is Nintendo’s Wii, which is another product that relies for its success not on its processor, but on its novel interface and broadly accessible software. I’m sure that if the iPad can do for mobile computing what the Wii did for console gaming, Apple will consider it a resounding success.

Tokyo, March 1, 2010 — Fujitsu today announced that it has completed joint development of a new supercomputer system with the Japan [...]

Tokyo, March 1, 2010 — Fujitsu today announced that it has completed joint development of a new supercomputer system with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The new supercomputer system went operational today.

Based on the LINPACK(1) performance benchmark, the new system achieved performance of 186.1 teraflops(2), which would make it the fastest supercomputer in Japan based on the latest TOP500(3) list of supercomputers announced in November 2009.

The new system will be used in a variety of areas of atomic energy research, including nuclear fusion simulations. It will also play an important role in ensuring the safe use of atomic energy.

New Supercomputer System

The new system is a hybrid system consisting of three computational server systems, each intended for different purposes: (1) Large-scale Parallel Computation Unit, (2) Application Development Unit for the Next Generation Supercomputer, and (3) SMP Server (shared memory server). The Large-scale Parallel Computation Unit, which forms the core of the new system, is able to deliver a high-performance parallel computing environment through its use of Fujitsu’s latest blade server, PRIMERGY BX900, in a configuration of 2,134 nodes (4,268 CPUs, 17,072 cores) connected using the latest InfiniBand QDR high-speed interconnect technology.

In addition, the next-generation code development unit uses a 300-node FX1 server cluster and the shared memory server uses a single-node SPARC Enterprise M9000 UNIX server. There is also a 36-unit ETERNUS DX80 disk array storage system.

All three server systems run Parallelnavi, Fujitsu’s high-performance computing middleware, which delivers a common development and execution environment and unified operations management, thereby ensuring a high level of operability.

Performance Capabilities

Making up the Large-scale Parallel Computation Unit at the heart of the system, the PRIMERGY BX900 servers were benchmarked using LINPACK and achieved a result that would place the new system first among the Japanese entries posted on the most recent TOP500 list (November 2009 edition) of supercomputers, and 19th in the world.

This measurement is the result of a complete system architecture that combines the raw performance of PRIMERGY BX900, the latest blade servers, with Fujitsu’s Parallelnavi HPC middleware and system integration technologies such as program tuning.

In particular, by mounting two InfiniBand QDR cards in each blade server one-way data transfers as fast as 8 GBps can be achieved. Furthermore, the science and technical math libraries of Parallelnavi equipped with world-class, high performance features stemming from the technology of Fujitsu Laboratories also contributed greatly to the LINPACK score.

Comment from Toshio Hirayama, Director of the Center for Computational Science and e-Systems of the JAEA

“Supercomputers are indispensible for the kind of scientific computations required in nuclear energy research and development. For that reason, I’m confident that the new supercomputer system will make it possible to bring calculations that had been impractically large within reach. By leveraging this new system, we intend to develop codes for the Next-Generation Supercomputer that will be deployed in 2012.”

PRIMERGY BX900

PRIMERGY BX900 is Fujitsu’s most advanced blade server for global businesses, with industry-leading mounting density of 18 blades per chassis and a total throughput of 6.4 Tbps, far superior to competing models.

In addition to its use in supercomputers, the PRIMERGY BX900 blade server is well-suited for a wide range of applications, including mission-critical enterprise computing systems, server consolidation, and the building of cloud environments.
